Steam Traps
Linder is the official authorised distributor for MATICA valves. Steam traps automatically discharge condensate, air and non-condensable gases without letting live steam escape. They protect heat transfer efficiency, safeguard equipment and prevent water hammer. Our range covers thermostatic, thermodynamic, inverted bucket and float operating principles.

What Is a Steam Trap, and Why Does It Matter So Much?
A steam trap is an automatic valve that discharges condensate and air from a steam line while holding live steam back. The job looks simple; the consequences are not.
If condensate is not removed, three things follow: the heat transfer surface is blanketed by a water film and efficiency drops; accumulated water is carried along at steam velocity and causes water hammer; and temperature control becomes unstable. In the opposite failure mode — a trap stuck open — the system leaks live steam continuously, which goes straight onto the fuel bill. In most plants a failed trap runs unnoticed for years; its cost is silent.
Four Operating Principles, Four Different Places
Thermostatic Traps
They respond to temperature difference, opening once condensate falls below steam temperature. They are excellent air venters and let a system warm up quickly on start-up. Tracing lines, radiators and small heaters are typical applications.
Thermodynamic Traps
A single moving disc operates on the pressure difference created by flow velocity. Simple, robust and tolerant of high pressure, they are widely used for draining steam distribution mains. Performance can fall away at very low pressures and in cold ambient conditions.
Inverted Bucket Traps
An inverted bucket rises on steam and sinks on condensate to operate the valve. They are resistant to water hammer and dirty condensate, which makes them the choice on heavy industrial lines where steam quality varies.
Float Traps
A float follows the condensate level and gives continuous, modulating discharge. This is the correct answer on heat exchangers and other processes with variable load where temperature control is critical; it is usually combined with a thermostatic air vent.
MATICA ST Series Steam Traps
Supplied directly as the official authorised distributor, the MATICA ST family covers all four principles across a wide range of connections, pressures and capacities: the ST100 series and its variants, ST200, ST300, ST400, ST500, ST600, ST800 and ST900, plus VB300. Sub-numbers within a series denote connection type, body material and capacity differences — selection follows the line data, not the table.
Data Required for Correct Trap Selection
| Data | What it determines |
|---|---|
| Operating pressure and ΔP | Capacity and choice of principle |
| Condensate load (kg/h) | Sizing — the most common source of error |
| Application type | Line drainage or process equipment? |
| Discharge arrangement | To atmosphere or into a recovery line? |
| Ambient conditions | Freezing risk, vibration, history of water hammer |
Note: the most frequent mistake in trap selection is oversizing. An oversized trap struggles to close and passes live steam — here, a safety margin does harm.
Maintenance: Making an Invisible Loss Visible
Steam traps must be surveyed periodically. An annual ultrasonic or temperature survey exposes failed units and, in most plants, pays for itself within the first season. As the official authorised distributor for MATICA valves, Linder provides spare-part continuity and selection support across the whole ST range.
