Butterfly Valves: Small Envelope, Large Diameter
A butterfly valve shuts off or throttles flow with a disc rotating on a shaft inside the line. Compared with gate and ball valves it is far shorter, lighter and cheaper, and that advantage grows with diameter. Above DN 300 the butterfly valve is often the only economical option.
Its second strength is throttling capability: flow can be modulated through disc angle, which makes the butterfly valve usable in control duty.
Three Basic Designs, Three Different Duties
Elastomer (Concentric) Seated
The disc sits centrally and closes against an elastomer liner. It delivers bubble-tight shut-off at low cost and is the standard answer for water, waste water, low-pressure air and general service. Its limit is temperature and pressure — whatever the elastomer can take.
Double Offset
The shaft is offset from both the disc centreline and the pipe axis, so the disc lifts away from the seat without rubbing: wear falls, operating torque drops and service life extends. This is the answer for medium and high-pressure process lines.
Triple Offset (Metal Seated)
A third offset creates a conical sealing geometry in which the sealing faces touch only at full closure. Metal-to-metal sealing allows operation in high temperature, steam and flue gas duties where no elastomer would survive.
WEY and MATICA Series in Our Catalogue
Every series below is supplied directly through Linder as the official authorised distributor.
- MATICA BV200 / BV600 / BV700 — different connection and seating options for industrial water, process and general service lines.
- WEY TF13 / TF20 — WEY butterfly valve series engineered for demanding process conditions.
- WEY TL20 / TW20 — WEY valve series targeting special sealing and durability requirements.
Three Common Selection Mistakes
- Looking only at diameter. Two butterfly valves of the same size are entirely different products if the seating differs. Medium and temperature come first, diameter second.
- Ignoring the throttling range. A butterfly valve held at very small opening angles for long periods suffers cavitation and accelerated wear; the control range belongs in the design stage.
- Treating actuation as an afterthought. Actuator torque is calculated from the valve's differential pressure. An undersized actuator added later will not close the valve fully.
Supply and Technical Support
As the official authorised distributor for WEY and MATICA valves, Linder supplies butterfly valves directly: genuine products, full technical documentation and manufacturer warranty. Send us your medium, pressure, temperature and duty data and we will define the right seating type and actuator together with you.
